I have been fortunate enough to visit some of the most celebrated beaches in the world — the Maldives, Thailand, Bali, and the Caribbean — but Passikudah left every single one of them in the shade. The sheer natural perfection of this place is almost impossible to put into words. The water is the most extraordinary shade of turquoise I have ever seen — so clear and so calm and so impossibly shallow that walking out into the bay feels like stepping into a living painting. We spent four days here doing absolutely nothing except swimming, snorkelling on the most beautiful coral reef, reading on the beach, and watching the most spectacular sunrises paint the sky in shades of gold and pink every morning. Passikudah is the definition of paradise and I will be returning every year for the rest of my life.

Passikudah was the final destination on our two week Sri Lanka itinerary and after everything we had already experienced — the ancient cities, the hill country, the wildlife safaris — we wondered if anything could still surprise us. Passikudah surprised us completely and profoundly. The beach is genuinely one of the most beautiful natural environments I have ever encountered anywhere in twenty years of travelling the world. The coral reef snorkelling was extraordinary — we spent hours in the crystal clear water surrounded by the most dazzling variety of tropical fish and coral formations in conditions of perfect visibility and warmth. The evenings on the beach as the sun went down over the bay in a blaze of colour were among the most romantic and peaceful moments of our entire trip. Passikudah is a true hidden gem and a destination of rare and lasting beauty.

We chose Passikudah as our final stop on a two week family holiday in Sri Lanka and it was the perfect way to end the most extraordinary trip we have ever taken together as a family. Our two children aged seven and ten were completely in their element from the moment they set foot on the beach — the shallow calm water meant they could swim and play freely and safely for hours on end without a moment of worry for their parents. The snorkelling on the reef was the highlight for the whole family — watching our children's faces light up with pure joy and wonder as they discovered the colourful coral gardens and tropical fish just beneath the surface was one of those parenting moments you treasure forever. Passikudah is quite simply the most perfect family beach destination in Sri Lanka and one of the finest we have discovered anywhere in the world.
