I have been on wildlife safaris in Africa, seen bears in Canada, and swum with whale sharks in the Philippines — but nothing, absolutely nothing, has come close to the dolphin watching experience in Kalpitiya. We set out early morning on a small boat into the glassy calm waters and within twenty minutes were completely surrounded by what our guide estimated to be over a thousand spinner dolphins. They were everywhere — leaping over the bow, spinning in the air alongside the boat, racing under the hull in groups of dozens at a time. I sat on the front of the boat with tears streaming down my face for a full hour. It was the single most overwhelming and beautiful natural encounter of my life and I will return to Kalpitiya for the rest of my days just to experience it again.

Kalpitiya was the most unexpected and wonderful surprise of our entire Sri Lanka trip. We almost skipped it in favour of spending more time on the south coast and I shudder to think what we would have missed. The landscape here is unlike anything else on the island — vast empty beaches, towering sand dunes, silver saltpans stretching to the horizon, and the most extraordinary sense of space and solitude that is increasingly rare in today's world. The diving on the Bar Reef was spectacular — we encountered two manta rays on our very first dive and the coral formations were some of the healthiest and most beautiful I have seen anywhere in over fifteen years of diving. Kalpitiya is a true hidden gem and I hope it stays that way just a little longer.

I arrived in Kalpitiya having never touched a kite in my life and left five days later completely and utterly obsessed with kitesurfing. The learning conditions on the lagoon are genuinely perfect — warm shallow water, consistent wind, and the most patient and knowledgeable instructors I could have wished for. By day three I was riding independently across the lagoon with the biggest smile on my face and by day five I was attempting my first jumps. But even beyond the kitesurfing, Kalpitiya itself is a magical place. The dolphin watching excursion on our rest day was one of the greatest experiences of my life and the sunsets over the lagoon every evening were the most spectacular I have ever seen. Kalpitiya is a very special place indeed.
