I have wanted to see a blue whale in the wild since I was a small child and Mirissa is where that lifelong dream finally came true in the most overwhelming and beautiful way imaginable. We set out from the harbour at dawn on a perfectly calm morning and within an hour our guide spotted the first blow on the horizon. What followed was forty five minutes in the company of not one but three blue whales surfacing, breathing, and diving within metres of our boat — their sheer scale and grace reducing every single person on board to tears of pure joy and wonder. I have travelled to over fifty countries and witnessed many extraordinary natural spectacles but nothing — absolutely nothing — has ever moved me as deeply as that morning on the ocean off Mirissa. It changed me in ways I am still discovering.

Mirissa is the kind of place that travel writers run out of superlatives trying to describe and I completely understand why. The beach is simply stunning — a wide arc of soft golden sand bookended by rocky headlands and backed by swaying coconut palms with the warm Indian Ocean stretching endlessly before you in every shade of blue and green imaginable. We spent five wonderful days here combining lazy mornings on the beach with snorkelling, a spectacular whale watching excursion, and the most incredible evenings eating fresh grilled seafood at the beachside restaurants as the sun went down in a blaze of orange and pink over the ocean. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and unhurried. Mirissa is not just a beach — it is a state of mind.

My husband and I chose Mirissa as the final stop on our Sri Lanka honeymoon and it was the most inspired decision we made in planning the entire trip. After two weeks of temples, safaris, hill country train rides, and cultural adventures, arriving in Mirissa felt like stepping into paradise. The beach is breathtakingly beautiful, the pace of life is wonderfully slow and romantic, and the sunsets from Parrot Rock every evening were so spectacular they almost did not seem real. The whale watching excursion on our second morning was the absolute highlight — we encountered a blue whale and a pod of spinner dolphins on the same trip and came back to shore completely speechless with joy and disbelief. Mirissa gave us the most perfect ending to the most perfect honeymoon we could ever have imagined.
