I have white water rafted in Nepal, Costa Rica, and New Zealand but the rafting experience in Kitulgala genuinely surprised me with its quality and excitement. The Kelani River delivers some seriously fun rapids and our guide was absolutely brilliant — safety conscious, experienced, and incredibly entertaining throughout the entire experience. We hit the water at 8am and by the time we finished the run, swam through the rapids, and jumped from the riverside rocks into the swirling pools below I was completely and utterly exhilarated in the best possible way. The jungle setting is stunning — dense green forest towering above both banks of the river and not a single sign of the modern world in any direction. Kitulgala is an absolute must for any adventure lover visiting Sri Lanka.

We visited Kitulgala as a family with our two teenage children who are both serious adventure enthusiasts and it was without question the highlight of our entire two week Sri Lanka holiday. The rafting was absolutely brilliant — our kids were screaming with excitement and joy from the very first rapid to the very last and our guide kept the energy and the laughter going throughout the entire experience. After the rafting we went on a guided jungle trek along the riverbank and spotted the most incredible variety of birds including a breathtaking glimpse of the elusive serendib scops owl that had our guide almost as excited as we were. The whole day felt like a perfectly crafted adventure from start to finish and the memories we made as a family here will last a lifetime.

I came to Kitulgala somewhat reluctantly as part of a corporate team building day organised by my company and left having completely rediscovered my love of the outdoors and adventure. The outbound activities our group participated in were brilliantly designed — challenging enough to genuinely test us both physically and mentally but always safe, well managed, and enormously fun. The white water rafting in the afternoon was the crowning glory of an already spectacular day — navigating the rapids together as a team with our hearts pounding and everyone screaming with laughter created a shared experience and a genuine bond between colleagues that no office activity could ever replicate. Kitulgala is a magical place and I am already planning my return visit to tackle the cave exploration and jungle trekking trails I did not get to experience on my first visit.
