I had been told by everyone who had visited Sri Lanka before me that Kandy was special — but nothing quite prepared me for the reality of just how special it truly is. Arriving by train through the misty green hills and catching that first glimpse of the city spread around its shimmering lake was one of those travel moments that stops you in your tracks and reminds you exactly why you chose to explore the world. The Temple of the Tooth is breathtaking — the architecture, the atmosphere, and the profound spiritual energy of the place are unlike anything I have encountered at any other religious site anywhere in my travels. Attending the evening puja ceremony with the drums echoing through the ancient halls and the sweet smell of incense filling the air was a moment of pure and lasting magic that I will carry with me forever.

I planned my entire Sri Lanka trip around being in Kandy for the Esala Perahera festival and it was the single best travel decision I have ever made in over twenty years of exploring the world. Nothing — no photograph, no documentary, no description — can prepare you for the reality of standing on the streets of Kandy as over a hundred magnificently decorated elephants draped in dazzling costumes of light and colour process past you to the thunderous sound of traditional drums and the flickering glow of thousands of torches lighting up the night sky. It is overwhelming, it is magnificent, it is deeply moving, and it is unlike anything else on earth. Kandy is an extraordinary city at any time of year but during the Perahera it becomes something truly transcendent.

Kandy was the destination on my Sri Lanka itinerary that I was perhaps least excited about before I arrived and the one I was most heartbroken to leave when the time came. The city has a depth of culture, history, and atmosphere that sneaks up on you gradually and then overwhelms you completely. The morning visit to the Temple of the Tooth as the mist still hung over the lake, the afternoon stroll through the extraordinary Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, the evening Kandyan dance performance with its hypnotic drumming and acrobatic fire walking — every experience layered beautifully on top of the last to create something genuinely profound. The food in Kandy is also exceptional — we had the most incredible rice and curry lunch at a tiny local restaurant overlooking the lake that I still think about regularly. Kandy is simply one of the greatest cities in Asia.
