I will be completely honest — Jaffna was a last minute addition to my Sri Lanka itinerary and I almost did not include it. That would have been the greatest travel mistake of my life. Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer depth and richness of this remarkable city. The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil left me absolutely speechless — the scale, the colour, the spiritual energy radiating from every stone and statue was overwhelming in the most beautiful way. The Jaffna Fort at sunset with the lagoon glittering behind it was one of the most atmospheric sights I have ever witnessed. The food here is extraordinary — some of the most complex and flavourful curries I have ever tasted in my life. Jaffna is raw, real, and utterly unforgettable. Go there.

I visited Jaffna during the Nallur Festival and it was without question the single most spectacular cultural experience of my entire travelling life. The streets surrounding the temple were a river of colour, devotion, and incredible energy — thousands of white clad pilgrims, enormous decorated chariots, the hypnotic rhythm of traditional drums, and the overwhelming fragrance of flowers and incense filling the warm night air. It was an experience that touched something deep inside me that I am still struggling to put into words. Beyond the festival the city itself is fascinating — the colonial fort, the resilient library, the bustling market, and the day trip to Delft Island with its wild ponies and ancient ruins were all extraordinary. Jaffna changed the way I think about travel.

As someone who has visited Sri Lanka three times before I thought I had seen everything this incredible island had to offer. Jaffna proved me spectacularly wrong. This city exists in a world entirely its own — the landscape, the culture, the food, the architecture, and above all the people are unlike anything I had encountered in the south or the hill country. The warmth and pride with which the people of Jaffna welcome visitors to their city is deeply moving given everything they have been through. The boat trip to Nainativu island to visit the ancient temple was a highlight I will never forget and the seafood crab curry I had at a tiny local restaurant near the fort was hands down the greatest single dish I have eaten anywhere in the world. Jaffna is not just a destination — it is a revelation.
