I fell completely and utterly in love with Hatton from the moment our train rounded the mountain and the most breathtaking panorama of emerald green tea plantations spread out before us as far as the eye could see. We stayed in a beautifully restored colonial planter's bungalow perched high on a hillside surrounded by tea bushes and the experience was nothing short of magical. Waking up to cool mountain mist drifting past the window, sipping freshly brewed Ceylon Tea on the veranda as the sun rose slowly over the hills, and spending lazy afternoons walking through the plantations in total peace and silence — it was the most restorative and deeply romantic experience of our entire trip. Hatton is a place that soothes the soul in the most extraordinary way.

I had been dreaming of climbing Adam's Peak for years and finally making that dream a reality from our base in Hatton was one of the most profound and moving experiences of my life. We began the climb at midnight by the light of thousands of oil lamps lining the ancient pilgrimage trail, surrounded by devoted Buddhist pilgrims chanting softly in the darkness. The climb was challenging but the atmosphere was unlike anything I have ever experienced — a shared human journey of faith, determination, and wonder that transcended language and culture entirely. Reaching the summit just as the first light of dawn broke over the mountains and watching the perfect triangular shadow of the peak stretch across the clouds below was a moment of pure and indescribable magic that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Hatton was the destination on our Sri Lanka itinerary that exceeded our expectations more than any other and that is truly saying something given the extraordinary quality of everything we experienced on the island. The tea plantation landscape is simply stunning — unlike anything else I have seen anywhere in the world. We spent a wonderful morning touring a working tea factory and learning about the entire process from the moment the leaf is plucked to the final brew and it gave us a profound new appreciation for every cup of tea we will ever drink again. The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking and we discovered hidden waterfalls, tiny village temples, and breathtaking viewpoints that we had entirely to ourselves. Hatton is an absolute treasure.
