I have surfed in Bali, Portugal, Costa Rica and Hawaii — but Arugam Bay has a magic that none of those places could match. The waves are world class, yes, but it is the atmosphere that truly sets it apart. The town is small, unpretentious, and completely authentic. Local fishermen share the beach with travelling surfers, tuk-tuks weave through dusty streets, and the smell of fresh coconut and spiced curry fills the air at every turn. I came for two weeks and stayed for two months. The surf at Pottuvil Point alone is worth the journey from anywhere in the world. Arugam Bay is not just a destination — it is a feeling.

I am not a surfer but Arugam Bay completely stole my heart. I visited during the season in July and the energy of the town was absolutely electric. Every morning I woke up to the sound of waves and spent my days exploring the lagoon by kayak, wandering through rice fields, and watching the most incredible sunsets from the beach. The food scene here is surprisingly wonderful — fresh grilled seafood, tropical smoothie bowls, and the most flavourful Sri Lankan curries I tasted on my entire trip. The people of Arugam Bay are warm, genuine, and incredibly welcoming. I left a little piece of my heart here and I cannot wait to return.

Arugam Bay was the last stop on my Sri Lanka road trip and it turned out to be the absolute best. I had heard it described as the coolest little town in Sri Lanka and I can confirm that is no exaggeration. The combination of pristine beaches, jungle, lagoon, and dunes all within minutes of each other is remarkable. I took a day safari to Kumana National Park and spotted elephants, crocodiles, and an astonishing variety of birds — all in a single morning. Back in town, the laid-back cafe culture and buzzing beach bars made every evening a pleasure. Whether you surf or not, Arugam Bay deserves a place on every Sri Lanka itinerary without question.
