Ramboda

We were travelling by car between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya and our wonderful driver suggested stopping at Ramboda Falls along the way. I am so incredibly glad he did because what we found there was one of the most naturally beautiful and dramatic sights of our entire two week Sri Lanka journey. The waterfall appears quite suddenly around a bend in the mountain road — a thundering white ribbon of water plunging over 100 metres down a face of lush green jungle into the misty valley below — and it is so breathtakingly dramatic and unexpected that our entire car fell completely silent for a full minute. We spent over an hour at Ramboda — walking down to the base of the lower falls, watching the mist drift across the valley, breathing the most wonderfully cool and fresh mountain air, and drinking the most perfectly brewed cup of Ceylon Tea at a tiny roadside stall with the most extraordinary view imaginable. Ramboda is a genuine and unexpected gem of the Sri Lanka hill country.

The road between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya is one of the most scenic mountain drives I have ever experienced anywhere in the world and Ramboda is its most spectacular highlight. The waterfall is simply magnificent — the sheer scale and power of it cascading down the mountain face surrounded by tea plantations and misty highland forest is a sight of extraordinary natural drama that I photographed from every possible angle for over an hour without ever feeling I had captured it adequately. The surrounding landscape is equally beautiful — the perfectly manicured rows of tea bushes covering the mountain slopes in every shade of green imaginable, the ancient temple perched on the rocky outcrop above the valley, and the cool misty air carrying the most delicate fragrance of fresh tea and tropical flowers. Ramboda deserves far more recognition than it currently receives as one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful and rewarding highland destinations.

Ramboda was not on my original Sri Lanka itinerary and was added as a spontaneous suggestion by our guide on the morning we drove from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. It turned out to be one of the most wonderful and unexpected discoveries of the entire trip. The waterfall is breathtaking — powerful, dramatic, and surrounded by some of the most lush and verdant highland scenery I have ever seen. We walked down to the base of the lower cascade and stood in the cool mist it generates feeling completely refreshed and invigorated after the long mountain drive. The tea plantation walk we did afterwards in the surrounding hills was equally wonderful — our guide showed us how the leaves are plucked, explained the entire process of tea production, and finished with the most incredible fresh brew at the plantation factory that I have been trying to recreate at home ever since. Ramboda is a beautiful and deeply rewarding stop that I recommend to every traveller making the highland journey between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
