Pinnawala

Pinnawala

If you have ever dreamed of getting up close with the most magnificent land animal on earth in a setting of genuine care and conservation, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an experience you will treasure for the rest of your life. Located just a short drive from Kandy in the lush green hills of Sri Lanka's Western Province, Pinnawala has been rescuing and caring for orphaned and injured wild elephants since 1975 and is now home to the largest captive herd of Asian elephants anywhere in the world. The undisputed highlight of any visit is the twice daily river bathing — when the entire magnificent herd makes its way down to the Maha Oya river for a joyful and spectacular splash that is as entertaining as it is deeply touching. Watching baby elephants tumble and play in the water while their elders bathe and socialise around them is one of those rare and genuinely magical wildlife moments that stays with you long after you leave.
