What is the best time of year to take this tour?
The best time to take the 05 Day Sri Lanka Short Escape is from November to April when the southern and central regions of Sri Lanka enjoy their dry season with warm sunny weather, calm seas, and ideal conditions for all the activities included in the itinerary. December to February is the peak season and the very best time for whale watching in Mirissa when blue whale sightings are virtually guaranteed in the deep waters off the southern coast. The hill country destinations of Kandy and Ella are beautiful and enjoyable throughout the year though the mountain scenery is at its most vivid and spectacular during the dry months. The Yala jeep safari is most rewarding between February and July when the dry season brings the wildlife to the waterholes and open areas where sightings are most frequent and spectacular.
Is the whale watching excursion in Mirissa guaranteed and what should I expect?
The whale watching excursion in Mirissa is listed as optional in the itinerary and takes place on the morning of Day 5 before the journey to Colombo. While no wildlife encounter in the natural world can ever be guaranteed, Mirissa offers by far the most reliable and consistent blue whale watching experience of any destination in the Indian Ocean region and sightings between December and April are extremely frequent. The excursion departs from Mirissa harbour in the early morning — typically between 6am and 7am — when the sea conditions are calmest and the light is most beautiful. Blue whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, and several species of acrobatic dolphins are all regularly encountered on these excursions making every trip out to sea a potential wildlife adventure of truly extraordinary and life changing proportions.
How physically demanding is this tour and is it suitable for all ages?
The 05 Day Sri Lanka Short Escape is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of travellers of different ages and fitness levels. The optional morning hike up Little Adam’s Peak in Ella on Day 3 is a gentle and very manageable trail of approximately 45 minutes that is suitable for most reasonably fit visitors including older travellers. The Yala jeep safari involves no walking and is conducted entirely from the comfort of an open topped four wheel drive vehicle making it accessible for all ages. The cultural visits in Kandy and Galle involve comfortable amounts of walking on well maintained paths and streets. Visitors with specific mobility requirements or health considerations are encouraged to discuss their needs with our team before booking so that we can make any necessary adjustments to ensure the most comfortable and enjoyable experience possible.
What is included and excluded in the 05 Day Sri Lanka Short Escape tour?
The tour includes private air conditioned transport throughout the entire itinerary, a personal English speaking chauffeur guide, accommodation for four nights at carefully selected quality hotels, entrance fees to all sites included in the itinerary, and all transfers including the final airport drop off. The optional whale watching excursion in Mirissa is available at an additional cost and should be booked in advance to secure your place as spaces fill up very quickly during the peak season. Meals are generally not included in the base package though breakfast is typically provided at most hotels — please confirm meal inclusions at the time of booking. International and domestic flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, gratuities for guides and drivers, and any activities listed as optional are not included in the base tour price and are the responsibility of the individual traveller.
